What will therapy be like for my child/teen?
Everyone experiences therapy differently, but there are some common experiences you can expect your child to have in therapy. I will engage your child or teen in talking about the reason they came to therapy. They will be given options about what they do and how they participate during session time, i.e. choosing from art materials to create a picture of their family. Gradually, children and teens use therapy to build a relationship with their therapist and use that relationship to try out new, more skillful, behaviors.
Your child may like therapy. However, some children and teens initially feel uncomfortable because the focus of a session is on exploring their emotions. You can help them respond openly to therapy by attending sessions regularly, showing your commitment to the treatment, and modeling comfort in expressing emotions.
How do I explain to my child/teen what therapy is and why they are going to therapy?
The answer to this depends upon the child’s developmental stage. Most children and teens respond to an honest, straightforward answer. Younger children may understand best when told that they are going to a “feelings teacher” or someone who will help them learn new ways of handling a situation or emotion, i.e. divorce. Older children and teens will respond to hearing that therapy is for them and it is not a punishment for “bad” behaviors. I am happy to help you develop a narrative to explain therapy to your child; call me at (408) 207-5269 to discuss your questions.
How much does therapy cost?
If you, your family or child is a Victim of Crime, you may qualify for free therapy services through the state Victim Compensation Program. See their witnesses programs or call (408) 295-2656 to discuss whether you or your family is covered.
I am currently not considered an “in-network” provider with any insurance plans. However, if you have an insurance that includes “out-of-network” coverage, a portion of my fee may be reimbursed to you through your insurance. Additionally, I reserve a few times in my schedule for clients that need a sliding fee.
